Ancient Egypt is one of the earliest advanced civilizations. Ancient Egypt had a rich religious tradition which permeated every aspect of society. For the Egyptians, the practice of astronomy went beyond legend. Huge temples and pyramids were built with specific astronomical orientations. The annual flooding of the Nile meant that the heliacal risings, or first visible appearances of stars at dawn, was of special interest in determining when this might occur, and it is no surprise that the 365 day period of the Egyptian calendar was already in use at the beginning of Egyptian history. Thus astronomy had both religious and practical purposes.
Since 1960s, we have come to rely more and more on artificial satellites for a variety of needs. Navigation with mobile phones, daily weather forecasts, instantaneous worldwide communication, TV broadcasting, and a constant ability to record high resolution images of vital regions are all examples of space technology that we've come to take for granted.
Egypt was aware about the importance of space since early 1960s. Many efforts had been done to acquire space science and technology during 1960s. In early 1970s, the first remote sensing centre was established which then become the National Authority of Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) in early 1990s. Late 1990s, Egyptian Space Program (ESP) for capacity building in satellite development and operation was launched. The first Egyptian developed satellite (EgyptSat-1) with Ukraine was launched in 2007. Establish a Space Agency dedicated for satellite developments and its applications was a dream since 1960s and it became a reality in 2019. In August 2019, the Egyptian Space Agency was launched which reflects the crucial of space for sustainable development of Egypt by the political leadership.
The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) aims to create and transfer space science and technology, localize it, and develop and possess its own capabilities to build satellites and launch them from Egyptian territory, in order to serve the country's Strategic Development Goals (SDGs) in the various fields of development in accordance with the requirements of national security.
The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) is mandated with setting the national space program and a roadmap for space projects, supporting research, studies and educational programs, supporting space science and technology applications, and disseminating and consolidating the culture of space civilization in the Egyptian Society with all its components.
The dream has become a reality and the responsibility of the agency's employees has become great, but all of them hope and will spare no effort to make Egypt a leader country in the field of space science and technology.
I hopes that this website will be a platform to introduce the Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA), its various activities and the leading position that we aspire to reach.
